Aftercare Program Overview

MONSIGNOR MCHUGH SCHOOL

EXTENDED CARE PROGRAM

2017-2018

MISSION

Monsignor McHugh’s Extended Care Program (Aftercare) is designed to meet the needs of its students (PreK through 8th grades) and their parents. The purpose of the program is to provide a child-centered, safe, stimulating, and happy environment, which allows children to interact freely with others. The philosophy of our program is “Homework First.” Homework will be completed before any recreation time is offered. Every effort will be made to assist children with their homework when possible, but ultimately, it is the responsibility of the child and parent to be sure ALL homework is completed and checked each night.

REGISTRATION

A non-refundable registration fee of $10 per child is required WITH your application, and will be assessed yearly. The registration form MUST be filled out completely and the information recorded on it should be current. Please notify the Director if there are any changes in business or personal information, such as address or phone number, during the school year.

FEES & PAYMENT POLICY

Weekly Use:

The cost is $60.00 per week per child with NO REFUNDS or CREDITS for missed days unless the child is sick for 3 or more consecutive days. A week consists of 3 or more days of use, which includes those days where the school is closed due to a holiday or snow day.

Payment is to be made the Friday BEFORE intended use or scheduled monthly. If scheduled monthly, you may pay the first of each month PRIOR to care being provided.

If you need to have your child stay for aftercare unexpectedly, please send a note in with payment on the day of use.

Hourly Use:

The cost is $6.00 per hour for first child, $4.00 per hour for each additional child, with NO REFUNDS or CREDITS for missed days unless the child is sick for 3 or more consecutive days. A week consists of 3 or more days of use, which includes those weeks where the school is closed due to a holiday or snow day.

Payment is to be made the Friday BEFORE intended use or scheduled monthly. If scheduled monthly, you may pay the first of each month PRIOR to care being provided.

If you need to have your child stay for aftercare unexpectedly, please send a note in with payment on the day of use.

Hours of Operation

During regular school days, the program will operate Monday through Friday from 2:30 pm until 5:30 pm. There will be a strict policy regarding children being picked up by the closing time.

On scheduled half days of school, care will NOT be provided.

The Extended Care Program (Aftercare) will be closed on days when school is closed.

In the case of inclement weather, the Extended Care Program WILL NOT operate if school is dismissed early or cancelled.

Safety & Medical Concerns

In the event of an injury of any kind, we notify parents. Please be aware that our school nurse is NOT on campus during aftercare hours. If a child is on medication, please let us know during registration or whenever this information changes.

If your child becomes sick during aftercare, the parent or emergency contact will be notified and you will be expected to pick up your child immediately.

Pick Up

Pick up is at the main entrance door of the school. Please call or text the aftercare phone (570-730-5138) upon arrival for pick up. Your child will be escorted to the main entrance door. Parents are required to sign their child(ren) out daily. The staff must be notified in advance, in writing, if someone other than the parents or authorized person on the registration form will be picking up a child. NO child will be allowed to leave with someone not authorized by the parent on the registration form. In case of last minute (emergency) child pick up arrangement, please call the office DURING REGULAR SCHOOL HOURS.

Late Pick Up

Parents of both Weekly and Hourly Use may be assessed a $5.00 fee for every ten (10) minutes late beyond your designated pick up time. After the third (3rd) late pick up, a child may be expelled from the program. If your child has not been picked up by 6:00 pm and notification has not been given, one of the emergency contacts will be phoned to pick up your child(ren). Once your child(ren) has been picked up by the emergency contact, a sign will be left on the main entrance door advising parents of the name of the person who picked up your child and the Extended Care staff will leave.

CONDUCT & DISCIPLINE

Students must follow the same rules of conduct as during normal school hours. Please refer to the Student/Parent Handbook. In the event of serious problems, the staff members will refer the problem to the principal. We will make every effort to work out issues with students before this referral. In the event of continued behavioral problems, the student will be removed from the roster with NO REFUND.

The program expects that the child(ren) will:

  • Arrive at the program promptly and orderly
  • Remain with the group and staff at all times
  • Be responsible for his/her actions
  • Take care of materials and equipment properly and return them to their proper location when finished and/or before leaving
  • Remain quiet during attendance, when a staff member is giving instructions, and during homework time
  • Infractions will be given in aftercare as per the Student/Parent Handbook and its addendum

ATTIRE

Children will stay in their MMS uniform during Extended Care.

PERSONAL ITEMS

MMS will not be held responsible for any personal items brought into the program (i.e.: phones, electronic games, iPods, iPads/tablets, toys from home, etc.).

Per Diocese of Scranton Office of Education guidelines, personal electronic devices will not be permitted to be used during Extended Care (aftercare).

SNACKS

Due to many dietary restrictions, aftercare does not provide snacks. You may send in a healthy snack, including a drink, for your child(ren) on an individual basis. Candy is not permitted.

LOCATION

Aftercare will be held in the early education wing in the secondary PreK room. Playtime may take place outside on the playground, weather permitting, or in the gymnasium.
